Jason Marquis, acquired on July 30 to provide depth at the back end of the Diamondbacks rotation, is likely lost for the season. The veteran right-hander fractured his right fibula when he was struck by a sharp one-hopper in the third inning of a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.

The Arizona Diamondbacks needed to clear a position player from their 25-man roster and someone from their 40-man roster in order for Micah Owings to make a start against the Twins today. They checked both boxes by releasing Russell Branyan, who hasn't hit nearly as well in the regular season as he did this spring.

After winning his major league debut a month ago, soft-tossing right-hander Josh Collmenter also won his first major league start on Saturday. Collmenter made history in that start and could be just what the doctor order to bolster an Arizona Diamondbacks rotation that has struggled all year.
