Just when you thought things were at there worst a fresh breathe of air was breathed into the San Diego Padres lungs this afternoon. After months of speculation the Padres and Pirates finally consummated a deal that sends San Diego native Brian Giles to the Padres for left-handed pitcher Oliver Perez, Jason Bay and a PTBNL (likely to be Corey Stewart).

While it may seem that a team that could lose 100 games this year couldn't possibly be a contender for next year, I am here to tell you that the San Diego Padres could and should contend next year. I really believe this team is not far away and with a few key acquisitions, could be right in the thick of things. They have some good hitters all around and seem to be setting themselves up nicely for their entrance into the new ballbark, um, excuse me, the ball park.

Well, let me start by stating that I've been a Padre Fan since the day the moved to "The Murph" which about as far back I can remember. I remember the "good ol' days" when being a Jr. Padre cost about .50 cents and you got something like 10 games for that. You could show up, sit in left field and yes, occasionally sneak down to 1st or 3rd base lines. Ok, you could pretty much just head on down there in those days.
