Jared Wells best outing; Portland gains ground

Portland extends their lead over Tacoma to 1.5 games. Mike Bynum gets a well deserved save. Gabe Ribas took his seventh loss since joining Mobile, another drumming. Jared Wells had his best start of the year and just in time as he pitched the Lake Elsinore Storm into the wildcard lead. Fort Wayne will continue a suspended game on Sunday. Eugene cracked 100,000 but the pitching faltered again. Henry Colbert has been knocked around since rejoining the Emeralds.

Jacobo responds, Vasquez has not

Jon Knott went 2-for-4 in his first game of extended action for the San Diego Padres. Blaine Neal pitched two scoreless innings of relief against the Devil Rays, not allowing a hit. Ramon Vasquez, meanwhile, is batting .193 in Portland and Justin Germano has not had a friendly return. Mobile losing is definite news. Kervin Jacobo called us to say thank you. And the Wizards win a marathon 17 inning game, the second time they have gone that long this year.

Hayhurst hitting stride, offense is not

Portland was shutout for the second straight night. Edgar Huerta suffered his first loss of the year but two wild pitches from Chris Rojas proved a difference maker. Michael Johnson hit a homer for the third straight day, another Elsinore loss. Gabe Ribas pitched well but the offense was stagnant again. Dirk Hayhurst is beginning to settle into his role as a starter and has performed quite well, culminating with a stellar outing on Wednesday.

Lake Elsinore, Inland Empire come close to blows

Call it an old fashioned brawl. When the top team in the division is playing number two, it is inevitable that emotions will run high as they did when Marcus Nettles was hit by a pitch. With the 5-3 win on Wednesday, Lake Elsinore is just a half game back of Inland Empire. The Storm have won the first two games of the series and a win in the finale would not only complete the sweep, but put them into first place.

Mental mistakes, remember this name

Mental mistakes don't cost Portland, despite six errors. They would have lost anyway. A connection similar to the Akinori Otsuka – Trevor Hoffman one in San Diego is taking place in Mobile. Looking for a player of the week in the California League? Look for an easy victory for Kervin Jacobo. Blunders from Fort Wayne everywhere on the field cost them a victory.
