Cougar Hoops Notebook: The future of the post

WERE IT NOT FOR three toe stubs in the non-conference portion of this college basketball season, Ernie Kent’s 12-15 Cougars currently would be gunning for a berth in the NIT or CBI. That doesn’t diminish the progress the Cougs have made this season. They have good shot at a sixth conference win Sunday evening at home against Washington and they've demonstrated the ability (albeit inconsistently) to hang with anyone in the league for long stretches.

WSU hoops: How sweep it is!

THE COUGARS responded. After Ernie Kent ripped his team following a mistake-filled loss to Arizona on Thursday, Washington State (12-15, 5-10) played one of its best games of the season in an 86-71 win over Arizona State (13-15, 6-9). The victory completing a WSU season sweep of a conference opponent for the first time since 2011-12. The win also featured the Cougars flipping the script on so many trouble spots this season.

Kent: Cougs will be sick watching this tape

ERNIE KENT knows his Cougars let one get away at Utah. The Washington State head hoops man talked a whole lot of X’s and O’s -- and missed opportunities -- after a 74-70 loss on the road that saw erratic play from both teams.

WSU hoops: A salute to player development

CHARLES CALLISON is not the same ballplayer who arrived at WSU as a JC transfer 18 months ago. He’s considerably better. That holds true for Conor Clifford as well. Ike Iroegbu has taken his game to another level in the last month. And Josh Hawkinson, we all know, went from a nondescript big at the end of the bench as a freshman to one of the most prolific scorers and rebounders in Pac-12 history.

WSU doesn't keep pace with rested UCLA

WASHINGTON STATE (11-11, 4-6 Pac-12) got off to a good start Wednesday night in their conference matchup with No. 11 UCLA (20-3, 7-3 Pac-12). Coming off a tough road trip in Arizona, fatigue played a major factor in Wazzu's 95-79 loss at home, said Ernie Kent.

HERE AT THE HALFWAY mark of the college basketball season, something interesting is going on: Close observers of the game, nationally and regionally, are taking notice of the job third-year coach Ernie Kent is doing with his Washington State Cougars.
