Daigle on track; Viloria too

Steve Watkins was fantastic over six before a bump in the seventh. Manny Ayala gets hit hard in the first game; Brett Bonvechio propels the offense in game two. Lake Elsinore keeps its winning ways behind a strong Richie Daigle effort. Andy Underwood is blasted again in a shellacking. Justin Baum is on track after a slow start to the year. Euclides Viloria does his job but for naught.

Padres MLN: Hits and misses and RBIs

Portland drops two – despite a nice relief appearance from Steve Watkins. Jared Wells didn't do as well in game two. Roger Deago did his job but the bullpen could not hold. Kyle Blanks drives in four and Brent Carter continues to get the best run support on the team. Jesus Lopez is an RBI machine in Fort Wayne.

Padres trade Alexander to Nationals

The San Diego Padres traded infielder Manny Alexander to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named or cash and reinstated infielder Brian Myrow and right-handed pitcher Steve Watkins from the disabled list of the Triple-A Portland squad. With the success of infielder Oscar Robles, Alexander became expendable.

Steve Watkins no-hit bid; Billy Hogan excels

Steve Watkins had a no-hitter broken up by a fluke play in the eighth inning. Watkins outdueled Cubs phenom Angel Guzman. One man took the Portland Beavers pitching to town. Fort Wayne got solid pitching from an unexpected source and the usual solid outings from Howie Pence and Leo Rosales. The bats are alive and well in Eugene as Alfredo Fernandez got his first win of the year.
