PULLMAN -- After three straight nailbiting losses, Washington State's heartbreak Cougars looked surprisingly upbeat during Tuesday's practice. Alex Brink and Jason Hill were in a Manning-Harrison, Montana-Rice-like zone. Freshman receiver Brandon Gibson was sterling, and Will Derting looks that much closer to getting back on the field.

BRANDON GIBSON made the weight room his second home this off season -- the incoming Cougar wide receiver out of Puyallup's Rogers High adding considerable size and strength. He'll be showcasing his new look and talents at the 4A/3A East-West all-star game two weeks from today. Also taking part in the annual event, incoming Cougars Kenny Alfred and Shelton Danzy, plus a future Cougar who'll make his mark on the WSU baseball diamond and a Spokane product who'll walk on at Washington State.

THE LINEBACKER BUILT LIKE ZEUS heads to WSU next month. At cornerback, the incoming Cougar who is always early plans a July 15 arrival. Another defensive back, regarded by many as Orange County's top prep football player last season, also reports for duty in July. The 2005 class can be characterized in many ways but one of the more apt is early, and ahead of schedule. Among several Cougs arriving well before fall camp -- three defensive standouts.

LAST YEAR, then incoming freshman Michael Bumpus showed up early on the WSU campus, eager to begin assimilating the Cougar offense. In the class of 2005, several incoming Cougs will follow the same path, arriving in Pullman around the middle of July. And one, incoming Cougar quarterback Arkelon Hall, will arrive even earlier than that. A lot earlier.

BACK IN FEBRUARY, coach Robin Pflugrad told a packed CF.C chatroom he looked forward to the arrival of Seattle's Shelton Danzy. The WSU recruiting coordinator's anticipation centered not only on Danzy's playing ability, but also in that he's a self starter with a gregarious personality -- yet another crimson recruiting ambassador on a roster teeming with them. Spokane's Skylar Jessen recently talked with Danzy, and the duo will meet up later this summer in Jessen's neck of the woods.
