In naming Norv Turner as the team's new head coach and appointing Ted Cottrell to be its defensive coordinator, San Diego kept in place the offensive and defensive schemes that allowed the team to win 14 games a season ago.

Before the Vikings' acquisition of middle linebacker Sam Cowart, they had shown interest in a tantalizing rookie linebacker at the combine. Even after acquiring Cowart, the Vikings continued their scouting with a pro day trip made by defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who came away impressed.
