The Fighting Illini basketball team is enjoying the benefits of having a former MVP helping out as video coordinator this year. Chester Frazier can't coach on the floor, but he is respected by the players as someone who has been through the wars and emerged victorious. It appears he is well on his way to establishing a career in coaching.

The Fighting Illini basketball team celebrated a successful 24-10 season, second place finish in the Big 10 and their 28th NCAA appearance at their awards banquet Tuesday night. Chester Frazier was the star of the show, winning three awards including Most Valuable Player.

It appears Illinois' seeding in the NCAA Tournament wasn't harmed by news of senior guard Chester Frazier's broken hand. But Frazier is the unquestioned leader, the heart and soul of the team. So the fate of the Illini in the tournament may depend on whether he can play with his injury. According to Chester, he will try it if at all possible.

The hug said it all. Bruce Weber was greeting his Illini seniors prior to the last home game of the season Sunday when Chester Frazier walked up with his mother and family. The two embraced as kindred spirits, as friends beyond basketball. They had tied their destinies to each other for four years, and now their shared pathway was nearing an end. It was a fitting tribute for a special player.

Some college athletes labor in obscurity, with fans unaware of their value. But if they keep working, one day they may find themselves getting long-overdue recognition. Illinois' Chester Frazier is just such an athlete. For three years, fans found fault in his play. But as a senior, he is emerging as a major candidate for Big Ten Defensive Player Of The Year. And maybe the team MVP as well.

All teams need leaders, players who take responsibility for their teammates as well as themselves. True leaders must unite varied personalities into a cohesive unit, encouraging and helping as much in the offseason as the season. In the seventh edition of the IlliniBoard.com Summer Series, IlliniBoard.com looks at the first of Illinois' two sophomore point guards, Chester Frazier. Last season Frazier became a favorite of many fans for his bulldog-like approach to the game while he was backing up Dee Brown. This year Chester has the chance to relinquish the backup role and become Illinois' starting point guard.
