This is the first part of a series looking at players we think will be key to Idaho's success in 2006. Daniel "D.J" Dykes, a junior-to-be out of California powerhouse Los Alamitos High School, has started 23 consecutive games at Strong Safety since joining the program as a true freshman in 2004. He has the most starting experience of any Vandal defensive back, and he still has two years of eligibility remaining. Without a doubt, he is one of the keys to the 2006 Vandal football season.

For 2005 the Vandals lose a senior starter at cornerback and a senior free safety (and captain) from the '04 squad. The losses will be difficult to replace, but the athletes moving up through the chart are impressive. Three returners played extensively last year as true freshmen, including a 12-game starter at strong safety. The depth chart is young, but the group gained significant experience last fall and the competition for playing time should be intense in '05.

As the University of Idaho football team prepares to move on without teammate Eric McMillan, we take a look at the Vandals upcoming opponent. Oregon (0-2, 0-0 PAC-10) doesn't lose at Autzen stadium very often, and they will be counting on the friendly confines of their home field to get their first win of the season.
