At the time, it didn't seem to matter much. With Demetri McCamey a rising junior and three promising guards ready to enroll, Jeff Jordan's decision to drop basketball seemed of little long-term consequence. But the walkon's return has proven one of the most important stories of this season's Illini team. Jordan started ahead of McCamey the last two games.

The Fighting Illini basketball team has been fortunate with injuries all year. And when someone was sick or injured, others compensated. That may be necessary again this week if Chester Frazier's hand injury limits his playing time. Fortunately, Jeff Jordan has been making strides and is ready if called upon.

The life of a walkon can be frustrating at times. Even though a walkon athlete practices every day with the team and dresses for the games, he doesn't get to eat at the training table or participate in all the activities available to a scholarship athlete. Thus, it was a big morale boost for Jeff Jordan when Coach Bruce Weber gave him a scholarship to begin the second semester.

A winning basketball team has to have leadership, good chemistry, and a number of role players who do their jobs without complaint. Illinois lost a number of games last year when problems arose in those areas. One player who hopes to help change that destructive pattern of play for the better is sophomore Jeff Jordan.
