Chris Shelton had a monster April, but had slowed mightily since, hitting just 6 home runs since April, and overswinging in many instances. The Tigers decided they needed more production from first, and so on Monday, the Tigers optioned Chris Shelton to Toledo, and traded for Pittsburgh first baseman Sean Casey.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Tigers have made quite a few roster moves, including the first big league trade of the year. But while some fans were critical of the trade, Tiger fans should be more concerned about that pair of youngsters that are currently occupying the Tigers' bench.

Chris Shelton for Carlos Pena, a bit of a surprise, but not completely unwarranted with Shelton hitting and Pena struggling. But the real shocker came Wednesday, when the Tigers designated utility infielder Jason Smith for assignment and called up Tony Giarratano.
