And it wasn't the fact that Idaho suffered huge losses on consecutive weekends leading up to the game, carrying a 7-5 season record and the hopes of tens of thousands of Idaho fans on its back after a decade without a bowl appearance. No, it was a heart pounding 32-second stretch.

A CAREER THAT BEGAN IN 2006 ENDED SUNDAY AS UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO head coach Robb Akey was relieved of coaching duties for the remainder of the season. Despite leading Idaho to a thrilling victory in the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl, Idaho (1-7) struggled for victories since, punctuated by Saturday's 70-28 throttling at Louisiana Tech. Offensive coordinator Jason Gesser was named interim head coach.

"It was not one kid's fault," University of Idaho head coach ROBB AKEY told the media following Thursday night's home opening loss to Eastern Washington of the Big Sky Conference in front of 11,136 fans in the Kibbie Dome. "We didn't play well enough -- we had opportunities to make things happen. It is a team effort ... it is a whole family effort. We didn't play well enough."

THE COLLEGIATE COACHING CAREER FOR STEVE AXMAN BEGAN IN 1974, and included stops at Army, Illinois, Arizona, Stanford, UCLA, Maryland, Northern Arizona, Minnesota, Washington and Montana, including the last five years as the offensive coordinator at Idaho. Along the way he coached several future NFL QBs, including Idaho's Nathan Enderle, UCLA's Troy Aikman, and Washington's Marques Tuiasosopo.

IDAHO CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE OFFENSIVELY, but last week the staff made a change when they elevated sophomore QB Taylor Davis to starter to battle the Warriors. Despite another impressive defensive effort that held Hawaii to just 16 points and scored a TD on a 70-yard pick, the Vandals fell short again in the 16-14 loss. Idaho head coach ROBB AKEY talked to the media about Saturday's game.
