J'son Stamper, a 6-foot-6 junior college transfer forward, was named GoldenSports.Net/Jeff Belzer Gopher Basketball Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending January 16th. Stamper had 16 points and 18 rebounds in two conference games.

The Minnesota Gophers won their 10th straight game and improved 2-0 in the Big Ten with a 63-52 victory over Purdue. The 2-0 start in conference play is the first in nine years at Williams Arena. The Gophers improved to 12-3 this season, matching last season's win total.

The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team lost for the second straight time, falling to Oklahoma 67-54 in the third-place game of the Great Alaska Shootout. Minnesota struggled with its shooting, going just 38% from the floor and 17% from three-point range.

Minnesota men's basketball team advanced to the Great Alaska Shootout semifinals with an 84-69 win over Furman. The Gophers improved to 2-0 and will face the 18th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, who defeated host Division II Alaska Anchorage 90-55, in Friday's first semifinal at 8:30 p.m. Central Time.

Michigan signed a conference-low just one player, while Illinois inked only two newcomers. Minnesota signed five players and will have Everett Pedescleaux, who signed a football letter of intent.
