IT STARTED OUT well for Oregon State, running out to a 5-0 lead in the opening round of the CBI Tournament. But sloppy play and turnovers soon called an end to that. Boston U forged a lead and then blew out the Beavers at Gill Coliseum, building their first half lead to as many as 21 points. From then on in the 96-78 loss, the outcome was never in doubt.

OREGON STATE HAS beaten six Pac-10 teams at least once since Craig Robinson arrived prior to last season. Playing host to UW at Gill Coliseum tonight, they'd love to add No. 7 to the list. There's a lot riding on the final regular season game headed into the Pac-10 tournament -- the Beavs could finish as high as a No. 4 seed with a win.

OMARI JOHNSON DIDN'T take the bait. After forcing another Oregon turnover, Johnson slowed it down rather than try for a fast break deuce. And therein lies the reason the Beavs came away with a crossroads 64-57 victory Sunday night over in-state rival and Pac-10 leading Oregon -- the Beavs imposed their pace of play on the road. And Oregon, in the end, couldn't keep up.

IN EVERY GAME on the hardcourt for Oregon State this season, there's been a period where they get away from their game. On offense, defense, things go awry -- and that's growing pains. But how long that off-period lasts has determined whether the Beavs win or lose this season. At Washington on Thursday night, it spelled the difference in a close game turning into a double digit loss.

FEW EXPECTED OSU to give UCLA much trouble on Thursday night and with a short bench, it wasn't much of a contest. UCLA raced to a double digit lead and was never seriously challenged as they drubbed the Beavers, who sat two of their top players for disciplinary reasons, by a score of 84-49 in Los Angeles. Oregon State (6-20, 0-14) shot 34 percent in extending a school-record losing streak to 16.

SEATTLE - The Washington Huskies expected a difficult game against Oregon State, but they almost got more than they bargained for as it took until the final minute for the home team to finally put the Beavers away 83-74, moving to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

OREGON STATE remained winless in the Pac-10 (0-5) as No. 8 ranked Cougars pounded out a 69-46 win in Pullman on Thursday night. The Beavers, who dropped to 6-11 on the season, next face Washington on Saturday and an Oregonian columnist this week opined OSU head man Jay John will need to upset the Huskies in order to keep his job.
