The Cubs will open the season with almost a completely new bullpen for 2010. Manager Lou Piniella has never been known for his patience with the pen, but he says he expects some trying moments, largely because the Cubs have three rookie relievers.

Kennedy May Be Poised for Breakout Year

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired Ian Kennedy with the notion that Kennedy had the potential to become a top-of-the-rotation pitcher in the near future and was already good enough to anchor the back end of a big league rotation. Kennedy, who has totaled fewer than 150 innings over the past two seasons combined, is now healthy and may be ready to meet expectations.

Diamondbacks Prepare for Winter Meetings

The Arizona Diamondbacks have removed two players from their 40-man roster to make room for acquisitions during the upcoming winter meetings and Rule 5 draft. The team is looking to add a #4 starter and a veteran position player, but have surprisingly not expressed the need for another arm in the bullpen.

D-backs Trim 40-Man Roster

As expected, the Arizona Diamondbacks have declined to exercise their 2010 club option on infielder Chad Tracy. Additionally, pitchers Yusmeiro Petit and Doug Slaten have been claimed off waivers while the D-backs outrighted outfielders Trent Oeltjen and Alex Romero to Triple-A Reno. Pitcher Daniel Cabrera elected to become a free agent rather than accept his assignment to Reno.

Webb Targeting a September Return

The absence of Brandon Webb has perhaps been the biggest culprit in a disappointing season for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs finally got some good news regarding the status of their ace - he will not need to undergo shoulder surgery, and hopes to return for the final month of the season.
