HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University men's basketball coach Donnie Jones announced today that Brandon Powell, a redshirt sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., has been dismissed from the team effective immediately due to a violation of team policy.

Marshall head coach Donnie Jones knew the Glenn Wilkes Classic Tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida would give his team much needed experience in playing in a post-season atmosphere. Unfortunately, the Herd that has been one-and-done in recent post-season league tournaments showed up today, as the Herd fell in the opening game to Morgan State, 72-67. The Herd will face UW-Green Bay Saturday.

The first game can sometimes set the tone for the rest of the year. Marshall has eight new players this season, and had had one exhibition game with a Division II Wheeling Central. They also hosted a closed scrimmage last week with VMI, who upset Kentucky Friday night at Lexington. Marshall didn't miss a beat in the opener, beating WVU Tech 110-57 in the team's first meeting since 1944.

Marshall's men's basketball has weathered injuries, just one public exhibition and the influx of nine newcomers. Sunday, all of that is set aside as the Herd plays for real for the first time in 2008-09 when Marshall hosts the WVU Tech Golden Bears. While Marshall was having a closed scrimmage last week with VMI (who upset UK in Lexington on Friday night), the Bears have already played six games.

Marshall got the kind of three-point shooting it expected by junior Chris Lutz, when he transferred to Marshall from Purdue. The former Boilermaker didn't disappoint as he hit 6-of-8 threes and scored a game-high 22 points as the Herd took down Wheeling Jesuit University, 87-58, at the Cam Henderson Center Saturday night. MU threw up 39 threes, a number coach Donnie Jones said was due to the zone.

HUNTINGTON - The Cam Henderson Center will once again serve as the site of Thundering Herd Madness on Saturday, Oct. 11, to officially kickoff the first practice for the Marshall University men's basketball team. But first, the Thundering Herd women's basketball team, along with the Locker Room Club is set to hold a season preview event entitled "Marshall Women's Basketball Is Sweet," on Oct. 9.

Following a season that saw Urban Meyer dismiss one of the Gators best defensive lineman and suspend another for off the field issues, once again he finds himself needing to reprimand a player. The recent troubles are becoming a recurring theme for Florida.
