IT STARTED OUT well for Oregon State, running out to a 5-0 lead in the opening round of the CBI Tournament. But sloppy play and turnovers soon called an end to that. Boston U forged a lead and then blew out the Beavers at Gill Coliseum, building their first half lead to as many as 21 points. From then on in the 96-78 loss, the outcome was never in doubt.

THE BEAVERS WILL surely be passed over by the NIT but could expect the CBI to come calling for a second consecutive year. In Oregon State's eyes it would be a welcome return despite the financial troubles it could create if it plays at home (OSU's athletic department is operating with a $4 million deficit this year and lost money on CBI home games last year).

OREGON STATE wanted to dictate the pace in the final regular season tilt against the Huskies. Deliberate, strong D.. this was the plan. It turned out to be more of a track meet, with Oregon State trying to keep pace while on their heels. The Beaver defense was ineffective, and OSU fell 82-70 at Gill Coliseum. The Beavs will get their chance for a different result against the UW in short order.

OREGON STATE HAD momentum in their corner. But after nearly erasing all of a 10-point halftime deficit, and climbing to within a single point with about five minutes remaining, UCLA ripped off five quick points. OSU played catch-up the rest of the way, unable to climb over the final hurdles in a 65-56 loss on the hardcourt at Pauley Pavilion.

THE BEAVS HAVE lost nine straight against UCLA on the hardcourt and have come up short at Pauley all but once since 1987-88. But there has arguably never been a better opportunity for OSU to pull the upset at UCLA as there is tonight -- the Bruins enter with an identical 12-14 mark to the Beavers and they're but one-game ahead of OSU in the Pac-10 standings.

OREGON STATE HAS had these maddening little lulls this season on the hardcourt, where in a close game they quickly -- very quickly -- fall behind by double digits in the blink of an eye. And then they spend the rest of the game trying to undo the damage down over that brief space of time. Such was again the case on Saturday, in a 62-52 loss to the Bruins.

IF OREGON STATE could consistently put together a full game out on the hardcourt, then you might really have something here. At Cal on Saturday, with the Bears a 16-point favorite and sitting atop the conference standings, it was all about the Beaver defense. But a key second half lapse led to another defeat in the loss column.
