Proving once again that the MLB Draft is full of surprises, Stanford junior RHP Nolan Gallagher (5-6, 7.27 ERA) was taken in the fourth round yesterday by the Seattle Mariners. The 6'3" righty from Red Lodge (Mont.) had a terribly disappointing season, and his draft stock took a big hit. One can imagine his obvious excitement when he talked with us yesterday shortly after being taken #135 overall.

The recent past has taught Stanford fans that nothing good comes of affairs with UC Davis. The worm turned, however, Tuesday night in the home finale at Sunken Diamond that lasted more than four hours. Stanford started a six-game homestand Tuesday night just the way they wanted, picking up a quick 5-1 lead with early offense. Then disaster struck when veteran Cardinal pitchers floundered out of the bullpen. San Jose State surged ahead and held on for an 11-8 win, their first in nine games against Stanford. Also, a Spartan freshman injured during the game suffered a medical emergency afterward.

College baseball never ceases to amaze with its unpredictability, but the Cardinal community was completely floored when junior Nolan Gallagher threw a four-hit complete game shutout on Sunday. The 6'3" righthander had struggled mightily this season before working during a two-week break on his delivery. As much as his outing impressed, his words telling his story will engage and delight you.
