NEW ORLEANS - Marshall saw Tulane just two weeks ago, when the Herd rallied to tie a game at the Henderson Center over the Green Wave and win in overtime, 89-86. This afternoon at ancient Fogelman Arena, in front of about 150 Tulane fans (listed attn: 1,843, not even close), TU played at its place and topped a poor-shooting Herd, 57-51. MU is now 12-15, 4-8 in Conference USA.

Marshall had a sub-par shooting night, hitting just 35 percent from floor and 11-of-20 at the line. Meanwhile, UTEP was hitting 28-of-33 from the stripe, including a perfect 20-of-20 for the Miners Stefan Jackson on his way to 35 points. But the Herd rallied throughout the half, falling 13 behind early and down ten with 3:30 to go. MU cut it to one with a minute left but UTEP held on, 74-67.

Head coaches Ken French of Rio Grande and Donnie Jones of Marshall had no idea who Marshall was going to play in the game at Huntington. Marshall had two players who left the team, plus Tyler Wilkerson is out for the year. Dago Pena is going to have surgery, and Tay Spann (back) and Shaq Johnson (ankle) were nursing injuries. Never fear, as The Herd won, 92-59, playing only eight players...

The weather in Huntington was awful for Herd fans, as an estimated 200,000 in the Tri-State were without power due to a severe winter storm dumping sleet and ice on top of 5-6 inches of snow. While the Herd was as hot as the weather in Hattiesburg, Miss. in the first half, the second half was so cold, shooting-wise, that Southern Miss got out to a big lead and stole a 84-79 win at home from MU.

Marshall started a two-game road trip, and the sixth road game in a month, in Orlando, Fla. at UCF Arena, hoping to build off the momentum of the SMU win on Wednesday. But Sunday, it was the Knights who made most of the shots, long and short, in a 87-69 win over the Herd. Marshall is just 1-9 away from Huntington, 1-4 in true road games and 0-4 against teams on neutral courts.

The annual Chesapeake Energy Capital City Classic, the 18th consecutive meeting of both men's and women's teams from Marshall and WVU in Charleston, saw the Mountaineers sweep both games for the ninth time since 1992 and third consecutive year. MU men's coach Donnie Jones is now 0-2 versus WVU's Bob Huggins while the Herd's Royce Chadwick, women's coach at MU, is now 1-7 with WVU's Mike Carey.

When things go bad, they often go worse and that seems to be the health report for this year's edition of the Thundering Herd men's basketball team. Markel Humphrey missed all of pre-season with a stress fracture in his foot, and now a bone bruise in the same foot at Dayton has caused so much inflammation he took a shot over the weekend. On the heels of that, Marcus Goode underwent surgery today.

Most coaches know coming out of a holiday break can be tricky, no matter the opponent in that first game after a Christmas break. Herd coach Donnie Jones saw that up close and personal in his first year at Marshall when Lipscomb handed the Herd a 72-62 loss on Dec. 29, 2007. But on Sunday, it was all the Herd in the first half, then hanging on in the second half for a 74-60 win over Tenn. State.
