Minor League veteran Corey Smith, who turned 28 in April, was selected as the Southern League batter of the Week for Chattanooga. He posted a .412/.450/1.000 record during the week, going 7-for-17 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, five runs scored and eight RBI.

Eovaldi Twirls One-Hitter in First Start

Albuquerque scored first but New Orleans ran off five unanswered runs to win 5-3. Corey Smith's solo home run in the last of the 10th gave Chattanooga a 6-5 win over Montgomery. Nate Eovaldi made his first start of the season, allowing only one hit over five but Visalia beat Inland Empire 5-2. The Great Lakes, led by starter Elisaul Pimentel who also allowed only one run, topped Lake County 5-0.

Padres make last round of minor league cuts

The San Diego Padres announced the release of 13 players today, moving to get their system ready for the start of minor league play next week. Eight pitchers and five position players were affected by today's move. Corey Smith is among the group at his own request.

A big year for a smaller McAnulty

Years ago, I heard the phrase "damning with faint praise" and wasn't quite sure what it meant. Now, trying to select the best hitter in Mobile this year, I have a much better understanding. Rather like winning the Jamaican bobsled trials, becoming the most potent offensive force for the Padres' Double-A affiliate was an accomplishment – but achieved against rather minimal competition.
