FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots announced the release of ten players today as they worked to reduce the roster to meet a league limit of 53 by Saturday. New England also traded rookie running back Patrick Cobbs to the Pittsburgh Steelers for an undisclosed draft pick Cobbs, a preseason playmaker was unlikely to clear waivers should the team have made the attempt.

Concern over who will backup New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady remains a topic of conversation in Patriots Nation. The presence of second-year pro Matt Cassel and rookies Corey Bramlet and Todd Mortensen leaves open the possibility that the Patriots will look at bringing in another veteran to compete with the youngsters for a chance to backup Brady.
