Cougs get boosts for struggling defense

PULLMAN -- Kickers tend to try the patience of football coaches, and Washington State's kickers are forcing Paul Wulff to take a decidedly patient approach in selecting a kicker as the Aug. 30 season opener approaches. Meanwhile, a JC linebacker joins the struggling defense, while a couple of big guns return from the injury list. On offense, a freshman receiver turns in the play of the day.

Cougars finding brief calm on the Palouse?

PULLMAN -- It was so quiet at Washington State's practice Thursday morning, you could hear a fumble drop. WSU's hard-driving coaching staff, concerned about mounting injuries, backed off the troops for the first time in fall camp. The result was a shorter, less intense and quieter workout than usual. Still, Devin Frischknecht, Tyrone Justin and Kevin Frank all made a little noise of their own.

LATE PRACTICE: D rules; Rogers, Gibson sharp

PULLMAN -- From an execution standpoint, the WSU offense did not have a great outing in the second of two Sunday sessions. But Brandon Gibson, as he has from the start of camp, continued to shine. And Gary Rogers fared well even with the offensive miscues. Defensively, Cory Evans, Matt Eichelberger and Tyrone Justin were among those with standout plays.

If you weren't fortunate enough to be in Pullman to witness the Cougs' session first hand, this CF.C exclusive report will make you feel as if you were and had a sideline pass.

Cougs air it out in voluntary workout

PULLMAN -- If the Cougars' voluntary summer workouts are any indication, Gary Rogers and Brandon Gibson feel right at home in Wazzu's new no-huddle offense. The duo combined for three touchdowns and a bevy of completions in a spirited skelly session earlier this week out on the Palouse. Meanwhile, a pair of tight ends also had very good receiving days.

PULLMAN -- In late afternoon heat beneath the long shadows of an enlarged frame that will house the new WSU scoreboard, the entire Cougar team was on this week to shake off any lingering rust from the holiday weekend. Mike Graise's Diary: Week Four

PULLMAN -- What's going on Cougs, Graise here. Sorry for the delay in getting a diary done, it's been a busy couple of weeks. We're back from the holiday and ready to go. But before we were able to enjoy a couple days off prior to the 4th of July, we had a potential issue on our hands -- maintaining focus during our workouts.
