As bad as things went in Lexington 48 hours earlier for the men, the Stanford women enjoyed an equal magnitude of success in their NCAA opener Saturday at Maples Pavilion. Cissy Pierce got it started, and Brooke Smith kept it going... and going. Stanford smoked Idaho State in every aspect of the 96-58 first round victory, which we enjoyed from the sideline. It was a crowded press room Sunday night in San Jose after Stanford's 67-52 win over USC in the Pac-10 Tournament semifinals. Head coach Tara VanDerveer was joined by four players at the podium, with the Cardinal answering questions on the three-point explosion of Candice Wiggins, interior defense, resting players, the Arizona State match-up Monday in the finals and much more.

The suspense was suspended on Saturday at the Pac-10 Tournament when junior Candice Wiggins took the floor for the first time in two weeks. A new drama unfolded when #9 seed Arizona trailed by two points at halftime. Wiggins and freshman Jayne Appel pushed #1-seeded Stanford to victory, 65-55. With the quarterfinals at HP Pavilion in San Jose untelevised, this account of the action is a must read.

Stanford traveled south Thursday for a non-conference meeting with the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The weather was mild in beautiful Santa Barbara, with chances of severe storms around 7pm predicted in the direct vicinity. Rain did fall, in the form of three-point field goals from junior Candice Wiggins, and the Gauchos found out the hard way that lighting can strike the same spot 32 times in a row.
