IT ALMOST SEEMED at times this spring the Cougs didn't have four starters and four backups in the secondary as much as they had 7-8 quality guys rotating. That might not entirely be the case, said Jody Sears. But WSU, said the co-defensive coordinator, made a pretty good-sized jump in speed and quality of play over the back-forty. And one of those DBs got Sears' vote for the play of the spring.

WITH ONLY four players sitting out spring drills due to injury (vs. 24 a year ago), head coach Paul Wulff can do what he wasn't able to the past two spring seasons: Unleash the head crackin'. Simply put, this spring on the Palouse will feature more full-speed contact and collisions because the Cougars are loaded with healthy bodies for the first time in ages.

WSU COACH PAUL Wulff paused for a moment to answer a rhetorical question. It has been so long since the Cougars started their original offensive line that Wulff initially thought it had not occurred since the season opener against Stanford. Seconds later, he remembered the correct answer was Sept. 12 against Hawaii -- one who week later in the second game of the season.

PULLMAN — Thursday morning saw the first WSU practice in full pads, but coaches nixed all-out tackling in the youth-oriented session to save wear and tear on players. Still, CB Anthony Houston — converted from receiver — drew plenty of whoops and hollers when he lowered his 6-foot-3 frame and put a solid lick on 5-8 running back Carl Winston coming out of the backfield after catching a swing pass.

THE UPDATED WEIGHTS for the Cougar footballers are in. The numbers, as they were in the spring, remain striking. There are many who have gained 15-20 pounds, and more, since last year. Then there are players who put on the bulk before the spring, then trimmed and repackaged it this summer to add quickness. CF.C charts the progression from fall of '08, to the '09 spring, to today.
