From a distance, you may have a hard time recognizing Travis Goethel. Gone is his trademark surfer dude long blond hair, as he decided to adjust to scorching Arizona summer heat and support a buzz cut. But just watch him for few plays on the field and you'll recognize all over again the ferocious hitting coupled with impressive athleticism that was the linebacker's trademark his freshman year.

Coming out of Vista (Calif.) High School, the 6-2 229 Travis Goethel was a heralded linebacker and one of five talented players in his position to join the Sun Devils in 2006. Ever since he arrived in Tempe, he has quickly made his mark. Last weekend against USC, the true freshman returned to Southern California and collected a career-high six tackles.

He looks more like your typical Southern California surfer than a talented linebacker. However, Pac-10 coaches and other programs in western region know better than that. A fine senior season made Travis Goethel one of the most coveted California players in his position, and a late strong push by the Sun Devils ultimately landed him amongst the maroon and gold.
