A COVETED COMBO GUARD had a "picture perfect" official visit out on the Palouse this past weekend, head man Tony Bennett and staff have picked up yet another player from a basketball-rich country, while a number of injured Cougs are on the mend and looking ready to go by the time official practices get underway in October.

WSU Hoops: Salvage effort begins in Bay Area

PULLMAN—This certainly wasn't how it was supposed to go. Two and a half weeks after upsetting 10th-ranked Washington on the road, Washington State has yet to win another game, dropping close decisions to UCLA, USC, Oregon and Oregon State. This week the Cougars travel to Northern California to play Stanford and Cal in an attempt to salvage a season that still has promise of landing them in a postseason tournament.

WSU Hoops: Surprising Cougs improve to 6-2

PULLMAN — Ranked ninth in the nation in scoring defense, Washington State put the cuffs on Portland Saturday, shutting down the Pilots 61-46. But it was the Cougar offensive exploits -- especially in the second half -- that told the story as WSU moved to a surprising 6-2 on the season.

Cougar hoops: Bennett boils over

PULLMAN -- It's days like this that remind Dick Bennett why he retired from coaching the first time around. Washington State's Tuesday basketball practice came to a sudden halt when Bennett launched into a blistering critique of his team's effort and then kicked them all off the court with a parting salvo: "Go home and call your girlfriend -- let her tell you how great you are." Despite the cutting invective, which lasted some 15 minutes, Bennett managed never to use a four-letter word.
