Baseball Suffers Rare Loss to Spartans

Stanford started a six-game homestand Tuesday night just the way they wanted, picking up a quick 5-1 lead with early offense. Then disaster struck when veteran Cardinal pitchers floundered out of the bullpen. San Jose State surged ahead and held on for an 11-8 win, their first in nine games against Stanford. Also, a Spartan freshman injured during the game suffered a medical emergency afterward.

Card K's 15 Times in Loss to Arizona

After a momentary blip Tuesday in non-conference action, Stanford continued hurling forward in this winless Pac-10 season Friday night with an 8-1 handling by Arizona. Wildcat sophomore Preston Guilmet went the distance and struck out 15 Stanford batters, while Cardinal sophomore Jeremy Bleich served up batting practice from the hill.

Card Comeback Can't Match Bruin Blitz

If you arrived for the ninth inning of Saturday's game at Sunken Diamond, you witnessed a flurry of offense with Stanford's nine runs and 10 hits following five runs and five hits by UCLA. But the Bruins had already built a massive lead and held on for the 16-11 victory, their second straight of the series. The Cardinal baseball team continues to excel in close games as Stanford edged California 5-4 on Saturday afternoon. The home team mustered a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a slight Bears lead with the bullpen then slamming the door in the final frames. The win marked Stanford's seventh straight victory while the Cardinal look for the three-game sweep Sunday afternoon.

Cardinal Sweep Fresno State

The weather didn't cooperate for most of the weekend, but Sunday did see Stanford and Fresno State do battle on the baseball field.
