Watson debut a success; Storm streak ends

Adrian Burnside is much better against righties than lefties. Lake Elsinore sees its streak go up in homers – three allowed by Greg Burke and three by Grant Varnell. Brandon Gomes had his worst outing as a pro. Yefri Carvajal homers in his first Northwest League at bat. Reggie Watson debuts and is instrumental in the AZL win.

Varnell off the DL; Kirby retires

Right-hander Grant Varnell was activated from disabled list today and right-hander Jon Kirby was placed on the San Diego Padres restricted retired list as the Fort Wayne Wizards start an 11-game, 12-day road trip.

The San Diego Padres placed Fort Wayne Wizards pitcher Grant Varnell on the disabled list and called up Stephen Faris from extended spring training to take his place.

Cesar Ramos' first; Grant Varnell solid

Jack Cust and Paul McAnulty paced the Portland offense, as both homered. Juan Ciriaco has been scuffling this year but had two hits in a Mobile loss. Cesar Ramos gave up five runs for the first time this year. Grant Varnell pitched beautifully in relief and David Freese drove in five.

Triples - George Kottaras, Luke Carlin

It was a clean sweep – every team in the Padres' minor league system lost with two falling in extra innings. Manny Alexander debuted and Freddy Guzman is a thief. Luke Carlin says he has quick feet. George Kottaras showed his own speed with a triple, among other things. Javis Diaz is back – spotted in Lake Elsinore. Kyle Blanks, fleet of foot. Grant Varnell the strike thrower.
