Cubs August 27 Minor League Recap

It took a week and two ballparks but the Daytona Cubs no-hit Dunedin for the second time this season as three pitchers combined for the 1-0 win in the completion of a seven-inning suspended game. Iowa, Tennessee and Mesa all won. In news off the field, the Cubs will send eight players to the Arizona Fall League including their top four prospects.

Kyler Burke and Austin Reed shut down Lakeland as Daytona won 6-1 for the only Cubs minor league win on Sunday. Third-round pick Jacob Hannemann hit his first pro homer for Boise.

Burke Begins New Plight

The Cubs are taking on another position change project at the lower levels of the farm system this spring. Kyler Burke, a first-round draft pick in 2006 with the San Diego Padres who spent three-plus years in the Cubs' system as an outfielder, traded in his bat this spring for a chance at a fresh start on the pitcher's mound.

Mitch Atkins was roughed up in his fourth start, suffering his first loss in the rotation this season for Iowa. Austin Bibens-Dirkx threw perhaps his best game this season for Tennessee. Kyler Burke hit another home run for Daytona, and the Cubs won another game. Peoria was held to five hits in an uneventful loss.

Cubs Prospect Round-up: May 26

Iowa got six strong innings from Casey Coleman, and lefty reliever John Gaub extended his scoreless innings streak in the bullpen. Tennessee was idle. Daytona used a key three-run home run from Kyler Burke to take a victory for the fourth straight night. Trey McNutt breezed through another start at Peoria to lower his ERA, which is the best in the Cubs' system.

J.R. Mathes turned in his second straight quality start, but Iowa's offense sputtered and managed just four hits behind him. Chris Carpenter got his first Double-A victory for Tennessee. Josh Vitters had his best game of the season, collecting a career-high four hits for Daytona. Nicholas Struck threw the Cubs farm system's first no-hitter of 2010.
