WSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL coach June Daugherty said last week that youth and injuries have cost her Cougars consistency so far in this young season. Perhaps appropriately, they're 5-5 with one non-conference game remaining -- today at Nevada -- before Pac-10 play opens on Jan. 1. Still, the third-year coach has reasons to smile.

IT WOULD SEEM appropriate for coach June Daugherty to temper enthusiasm about her upcoming women's basketball team at Washington State simply because of the program's bleak history. But pessimism never has been a part of Daugherty's annual preseason outlook of her teams' prospects, whether at Boise State (1989-96), Washington (1996-2007) or now at WSU, where she is beginning her second season.

THE OLD REFRAIN that Pullman is a tough place to recruit to doesn't add up for June Daugherty. In her first year at the helm of Cougar women's basketball, she invited eight high school prospects to Pullman for official visits. Seven -- some of whom could be starters come November -- decided to attend Washington State. That's an unprecedented success rate not even Daugherty imagined possible.
