Derrick Low: Hannibal Lecter of the hardwood

AS DERRICK LOW prepares for the Cougs' first-round NCAA tourney match up today against Winthrop, there will be no set routine, no superstitions to follow, no specific meal to eat. In fact, the senior shooting guard doesn't like to eat much at all on game days. He will, however, sneak up on an unsuspecting teammate and bite him in the shoulder. Just call Low the Hannibal Lecter of the hardwood.

Bennett to Cougar bench: Be ready

WASHINGTON STATE will head into Saturday night's league opener against the Huskies with a seven man rotation but it won't be a surprise to see others -- and perhaps two in particular -- beyond that group play some key minutes against Washington. And if Washington State is going to log their sixth straight win over the UW, the bench will need to produce when called upon.

THE BOX SCORE DIDN'T reflect it, but Washington State's two hard-fought road victories in the last week, over Baylor and Gonzaga, were attributable as much to Thomas Abercrombie, Stephen Sauls, Abe Lodwick and the rest of Tony Bennett's backup crew as they were to Kyle Weaver and the other mainstays.

Cross and Sauls compete for PG playing time

PULLMAN -- Basketball practices on the Palouse have been underway for less than a week but it's clear a battle royale is shaping up between senior Jeremy Cross and freshman Stephen Sauls for the backup point guard spot behind Taylor Rochestie. Both are noted for their skills at the end of the court where Bennett-coached teams tend to make their marks.

HOOPS: Cougs author new global chapters

WASHINGTON STATE's Aron Baynes and Thomas Abercrombie opened play in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday for their respective national teams, Australia and New Zealand. Baynes, the Wazzu center, was everywhere, logging a double-double. Abercrombie, who plays guard for the resurgent Cougs, did a little bit of everything, contributing rebounds, assists, points and blocks.
