NEW ORLEANS - Marshall saw Tulane just two weeks ago, when the Herd rallied to tie a game at the Henderson Center over the Green Wave and win in overtime, 89-86. This afternoon at ancient Fogelman Arena, in front of about 150 Tulane fans (listed attn: 1,843, not even close), TU played at its place and topped a poor-shooting Herd, 57-51. MU is now 12-15, 4-8 in Conference USA.

HUNTINGTON - Marshall played like the team that had won four in a row, which Houston had done to move into second in Conference USA men's basketball's standings. The Herd forced the Cougars into 11 turnovers, matched them with 30 rebounds and shot nearly 59 percent from the floor. The Thundering Herd took down a team MU had never beat, 88-83, with just eight players dressed against UH Wednesday.

Head coaches Ken French of Rio Grande and Donnie Jones of Marshall had no idea who Marshall was going to play in the game at Huntington. Marshall had two players who left the team, plus Tyler Wilkerson is out for the year. Dago Pena is going to have surgery, and Tay Spann (back) and Shaq Johnson (ankle) were nursing injuries. Never fear, as The Herd won, 92-59, playing only eight players...

Marshall's aim to shut down Tulsa's 7-foot junior, Jerome Jordan, to have a chance to break a losing streak sitting at three straight and five of the last six. Marshall did that, holding the TU center to just eight points and five rebounds (in front of four or five NBA scouts at court side). MU even out-rebounded Tulsa, but you don't get points for boards, and Marshall shot awful in a 73-57 loss.

40 minutes wasn't enough for Marshall and UAB at the Henderson Center on Saturday night. Tied at 69-69 at the end of regulation when Damier Pitts missed a three (part of an 0-of-12 night) UAB would turn three Marshall turnovers into six points and pull away for a 75-73 win. But it wasn't completely over until Markel Humphrey had a shot blocked with :04.5 left and missed a three at the buzzer.

The weather in Huntington was awful for Herd fans, as an estimated 200,000 in the Tri-State were without power due to a severe winter storm dumping sleet and ice on top of 5-6 inches of snow. While the Herd was as hot as the weather in Hattiesburg, Miss. in the first half, the second half was so cold, shooting-wise, that Southern Miss got out to a big lead and stole a 84-79 win at home from MU.

The annual Chesapeake Energy Capital City Classic, the 18th consecutive meeting of both men's and women's teams from Marshall and WVU in Charleston, saw the Mountaineers sweep both games for the ninth time since 1992 and third consecutive year. MU men's coach Donnie Jones is now 0-2 versus WVU's Bob Huggins while the Herd's Royce Chadwick, women's coach at MU, is now 1-7 with WVU's Mike Carey.

Most coaches know coming out of a holiday break can be tricky, no matter the opponent in that first game after a Christmas break. Herd coach Donnie Jones saw that up close and personal in his first year at Marshall when Lipscomb handed the Herd a 72-62 loss on Dec. 29, 2007. But on Sunday, it was all the Herd in the first half, then hanging on in the second half for a 74-60 win over Tenn. State.
