Sauls to transfer, freeing scholie for ... ?

ONE OF THE TWO BIGGEST hurdles in state player of the year DeAngelo Casto's plan to play for Washington State next season has been cleared. Stephen Sauls, the Cougars' freshman guard who left the team and withdrew from school after sustaining a nasty concussion in January, has been granted his release from WSU and plans to transfer somewhere closer to his Houston-area home.

BENNETT: Rankings aside, Wazzu D must improve

ONE OF THE keys to Washington State's remarkable turnaround on the basketball court the past two seasons has been Tony Bennett's outright refusal to accept anything less than optimum effort at all times. The genial, easy-going image that Bennett almost invariably projects in public often gives way to a demanding, hard-nosed leader of men at practices and meetings.

Next up for Cougs, unique Arizona teams

PULLMAN--Basketball teams in the Pac-10 have dramatically upgraded the emphasis on D in recent years but Arizona stubbornly refused to stray from their run, gun and maybe-possibly-perhaps pretend to defend style of play. That changed after last season, when longtime UA coach Lute Olson lured ex-Wildcat assistant Kevin O'Neill back to Tucson to teach the gritty man-to-man defense O'Neill cherishes.

WSU Notebook: Forrest clear cut heads list

PULLMAN -- It turns out that Derrick Low and Daven Harmeling, key actors in Washington State's binge of three-pointers in the waning moments at UCLA, are sharp with the shears as well as the basketball. Head coach Tony Bennett, however, was withholding judgment Monday on the pair's new vocation.

Bennett paints undefeated Cougs as 'dogs

WASHINGTON STATE is unbeaten in the Pac-10, ranked fourth in the nation and loaded with experience. USC is winless in the Pac-10, unranked and loaded with inexperience. Only Tony Bennett, the perpetual underdog, can make this scenario sound like a potential disadvantage heading into Thursday's game in L.A. Then again, USC's 9-5 record includes four-point losses to No. 4 Kansas and No. 2 Memphis.

Cougar hoops: A scare, cold water & more

PULLMAN -- Freshman guard Stephen Sauls threw a brief scare into the Cougars at practice Monday, while junior forward Daven Harmeling threw cold water on WSU's "pathetic" history at Pauley Pavilion. The real fireworks, though, won't begin until Thursday when the Cougs launch what could prove to be a highly crucial road swing through Los Angeles.

Cougar hoops notebook: Hail to the deep bench

THE BOX SCORE DIDN'T reflect it, but Washington State's two hard-fought road victories in the last week, over Baylor and Gonzaga, were attributable as much to Thomas Abercrombie, Stephen Sauls, Abe Lodwick and the rest of Tony Bennett's backup crew as they were to Kyle Weaver and the other mainstays.

Cougar Hoops: Transitions, scrappers, polls

HERE'S A PEDICTION you can take to the bank: Washington State will rank at or near the bottom of the Pac-10 in offensive rebounding this season. And that's mostly a good thing, because the Cougs' stifling defense is predicated on shutting down transition baskets. Meanwhile, the Pac-10 media poll was released today. Where did the Cougs land?
