PULLMAN -- NFL and CFL scouts descended on Washington State's indoor practice facility Wednesday to put a dozen Cougars through their paces as part of the annual Pro Day workout. Defensive back Markus Dawes was the top cat in two assessment categories. Quarterback Gary Rogers was back in action and receiver Brandon Gibson was there but not running.

PULLMAN -- Markus Dawes, recently back from surgery, made some picturesque leaping grabs during DB catching drills Sunday. He won't start against Oklahoma State this week, but his work served as a metaphor for the Cougs' entire corps of cornerbacks: They're rounding into shape. Co-defensive coordinator Jody Sears says three have made the biggest case for starting but many could be in line for PT.

PULLMAN -- Washington State coach Paul Wulff says he hasn't decided if any true freshmen will play this season, but Jared Karstetter and Kevin Norrell might be making Wulff's decision for him. Karstetter and Norrell continued their strong play in fall camp by adding to their collection of highlight-reel catches at wide receiver during Tuesday's two practices.

PULLMAN--There was no Sunday morning hangover from Saturday's rough scrimmage outing in the sweltering heat. The Cougs came out fired up, and the emotion Paul Wulff expected to see at the outset yesterday was evident from the get-go on Sunday morning, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. And lest attentions start to drift, well, assistant coach Chris Ball took care of that.

PULLMAN -- Paul Wulff the idealist wants his football team to be flawless after five days of practice. Paul Wulff the realist forces himself to take a deep breath and take a more sensible approach. "There were moments of really good stuff and not," the Washington State coach said after the Cougars practiced in full pads for the first time Saturday morning.

PULLMAN – Paul Wulff said all of WSU's veterans and recruits should be cleared academically by Tuesday. And that includes 2007 starting cornerback Devin Giles, who missed spring practice and took a heavy class load during the spring and summer semesters to become eligible. He wasn't the only Coug hitting the books hard this summer.
