INCOMING PREPSTERS are rarely, if ever, listed by Washington State on its post-spring football depth chart. But one is this year. And junior college transfers, while always listed, usually are slotted at this time of year at the bottom of their position tree. But there are four exceptions this time around, with a starter among them.

SPRING WORKOUTS commence on the Palouse late this week, with the Cougars looking to fill six big holes on defense by the time the proceedings end on April 14. Among the team's needs are two new starters each at cornerback and outside linebacker. Corner figures to be the most exciting position-watch on either side of the ball this spring -- and the dust there may not truly settle until late August.

ALL WEEK before Washington State's 34-23 win over then BCS No. 14 Oregon, the Cougar coaching staff preached to the players over and over again: Expect to win. The words might be different this week but the message has remained the same as a depleted WSU team travels this morning to L.A: Expect to win. Seven WSU coaches are already there ahead of the players, out on the recruiting trail.
