But things are not as rosy as they might seem. Cal had to struggle to get a 20-13 win over a Washington State team that has not won a Pac-10 game since 2008. The Bears trailed at halftime, did not do a lot offensively against a Washington State team that ranked last in the nation in total defense entering the game, and did not put the game away until it got a first down in the final minutes.
