When Devin Mahina came to BYU, his father was a big influence on that decision. Coming from the islands of Tonga, B.S. Mahina took an active role in his son’s career coming from such humble circumstances. Unfortunately, Devin Mahina’s father passed away a year ago and won’t be there to see his son graduate with a college degree.

The BYU tight end position has slowly reared its head once again. Over the past couple of years, the tight end position seemed to have disappeared from what had been a much storied BYU offense. Slowly but surely, Devin Mahina is accomplishing what he had set out to accomplish for the tight end position: to bring it back.

The BYU Cougars have lost three in a row to teams they arguably should have beaten. Against Nevada the Cougars gave up 29 unanswered points and Christian Stewart is still looking for his first win as a starting quarterback. The Cougars look to turn around their recent string of unfortunate losses by claiming a victory on the road against Boise State.

The tight end position hasn’t been as active at BYU in recent years. With the introduction of new senior quarterback Christian Stewart into the Cougar offense, the tight end position might be making a comeback. Devin Mahina hopes to bring an additional threat element to BYU’s offense following his success during the UCF game.

BYU lost arguably one of its best linebacking cores in recent memory. Uani ‘Unga & Kyle Van Noy are probably two of the best BYU's had in recent memory, & losing them along with Spencer Hadley, Tyler Beck, & Austen Jorgensen would devastate most programs. However, BYU tight end Devin Mahina feels the group is in good hands & gives BYU fans a look as to why in this edition of Evaluating the Foe.

Tight end Devin Mahina has been out on the practice field running through player drills but not team scrimmages. Cougar defensive lineman Russell Tialavea is home and excited to get going, but he'll have to wait to practice due to an injury he suffered while serving out in the mission field. Both Mahina and Tialavea should be back in full action by fall camp.
