The Royals on Wednesday promoted Blake Wood to Kansas City and designated reliever Josh Rupe for assignment. The 6-foot-5 righthander has been serving as the O-Royals' closer this season, logging a 2.16 ERA with five saves in 16.2 innings pitched.

A back injury sidelined Blake Wood for the first half of the 2007 season, but he took full advantage of his rehab, refining his mechanics and emerging from the ordeal as a better pitcher. Over the weekend, he was promoted to Wilmington, where he'll join the Blue Rocks in time for the Carolina League playoffs. Georgia Tech's inability to knock in runners in scoring position led to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of #2 North Carolina. UNC ace Andrew Miller had a career high 13 strike outs as he raised his record to 5-0. Miller entered the game with a 1.91 era. His 7 shutout innings lowered that even further.
