During a recent practice wide receiver T.J. Simpson made an effortless catch in a drill, hauling in a ball that wasn't all that perfectly thrown. The play elicits a "T.J. Smooth" call from his position coach Eric Yarber, and is just one more example of the fine performance Simpson is displaying in the pre-season.

A coaching change, such as the one the Sun Devils went through last year, always carries the possibility of losing verbal commitments made to the old staff. T.J. Simpson, a local star wide receiver, de-committed from his hometown college, and ASU was in danger of losing a prized recruit. Yet once Dennis Erickson was hired Simpson realized that his initial decision was ultimately the right one.

Simpson saw Monday night on T.V. the Florida Gators capture the national championship in an offensive explosion employed through a spread offense. That wide receiver friendly scheme, a staple of new ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson, is one reason why the Peoria wide receiver decided earlier in the day to re-commit to the Sun Devils.

T.J. SIMPSON, formerly a verbal commitment to another Pac-10 school, took a recent official visit to Oregon State. The 6-2, 175-pound receiver with 4.4 speed out of Peoria, Ariz., says a number of schools are still under consideration, talks about the trip to Corvallis and discusses a pending unofficial trip that could very well decide where he ends up.

AMONG THE TOP RECEIVER targets for Oregon State this recruiting class is T.J. Simpson. The 6-2, 175-pound receiver was a one-time verbal commitment to Arizona State but after the Sun Devils' coaching change, opened his recruitment back up. A group of four is standing out for Simpson, one of whom includes the Beavs. He officially trips to Corvallis this weekend.
