HOOPS: Beavs end regular season on down note

ROBERTO NELSON WAS so far into the zone, he nearly couldn't be seen from the ground. But his 34 points didn't help the Beavs on defense, and it couldn't overcome the benching of several Beav players, and Oregon State ended the regular season with a 80-66 loss at the hands of Arizona State.

A Civil War blowout: Beavs sweep Ducks!

THE DUCKS MUST have been wondering early what was going on. Oregon State was pushing the ball on offense, hard -- not their usual modus operandi. Combined with a tenacious zone defense, long distance three-balls by Omari Johnson and electrifying play by freshman Jared Cunningham, OSU jumped out to a halftime lead. It would only get bigger in the second half.

HOOPS: Beavs stun Ducks 64-57

OMARI JOHNSON DIDN'T take the bait. After forcing another Oregon turnover, Johnson slowed it down rather than try for a fast break deuce. And therein lies the reason the Beavs came away with a crossroads 64-57 victory Sunday night over in-state rival and Pac-10 leading Oregon -- the Beavs imposed their pace of play on the road. And Oregon, in the end, couldn't keep up.

HOOPS: Beavs drop another close one

THE TWO GAMES PLAYED OUT a little differently on the hardcourt, but the end result was the same. The Beavs lost 65-60 to Washington State on Saturday night, after coming up short on Thursday to Washington by a 76-70 margin in Seattle. Against Wazzu, the Beavs clawed back from a 10-point second half deficit to tie the game twice in the closing minutes, but couldn't climb over the top.

HOOPS: Beavs pull away to even record at 5-5

CRAIG ROBINSON NEEDED this one to play out like it did. Oh, it was far from perfect, but after some recent and disheartening losses, the Beavs' second year head man needed his team to put on a second-half surge -- and to cruise to a double digit victory. And that was just what the Beavs did Saturday night at home in the 76-62 win over Mississippi Valley State.

CRAIG ROBINSON SAID often this season he wanted to see Rickey Claitt be less unselfish. In the senior's final game at OSU, he got his wish. Claitt went off, scorching the nylon chord for 28 points in El Paso and nailing 5-of-6 from three point land. Roeland Schaftenaar, named the MVP of the tournament, poured in 12 points and dished seven assists as OSU finished a remarkable one season turnaround.

Led by Deane & Johnson, OSU perseveres in win

BY ALL RIGHTS, the Beavers shouldn't have been in it at halftime of their first round game in the CBI against Houston. Oregon State couldn't buy a bucket, and the only thing that kept them close after 20 minutes was that Houston was actually shooting the ball worse. But a block by Omari Johnson led to a Beaver resurgence and Oregon State advanced to the quarterfinals with a 49-45 win.

IT WAS NOT pretty at times, but it was thrilling. The Beaver lapses, particularly in the first half, were many. But Oregon State tightened things up -- so while UO sharpshooter Tajuan Porter rained 19 points over the first 20 minutes, the Beavers answered in limiting Oregon to a mere 19 points total in the second half, and OSU slugged their way to a 57-54 victory in the Civil War on the hardcourt.
