THE MAGIC NUMBER: Mississippi State's regional-opening win over Southern Mississippi was an exception to the season's trend. No, not in beating an in-state foe or even the shutout (read related notes to follow), but because the Bulldogs won on just three runs. Typically, State has had to score six runs to be sure of success.
