BEN JOHNSON, a close friend of Tony Bennett's since childhood, has elected to remain at Washington State as an assistant men's basketball coach. Ken Bone, Bennett's replacement as head coach, made the announcement Thursday afternoon on KJR radio of Seattle.

WASHINGTON STATE freshman forward DeAngelo Casto told a Spokane television station that several players cried Monday afternoon during an emotional meeting with Tony Bennett when the coach informed the team that he was leaving for Virginia. The big shot blocker also talked about his future, while the parent of another notable freshman weighed in as well.

CHARLOTTE -- David Chadwick, the 6-9 All-State forward from North Carolina who will be suiting up for WSU next season, has only vague recollections of the NBA ballplayer that used to hang out at the Chadwick house. But the miracle of technology has preserved a glimpse -- a classic one, in fact -- of the toddler David being "rescued" from an Atlantic Ocean surf by the Charlotte Hornets guard.
