PATRICK SIMON, the son of a Washington State graduate, grew up a diehard Cougars fan. He jumped at the chance to make the earliest verbal commitment in WSU sports history when he was just a 14-year-old freshman at Ephrata High School, and he arrived in Pullman two years ago with visions of stardom.

WASHINGTON STATE COACH Ken Bone is not giving up hope that his best player will be able to compete in the best-of-three College Basketball Invitational championship series that begins at 7 p.m. Monday against Pittsburgh (TV: HDNet) at Friel Court. Bone said during his Saturday teleconference that junior center Brock Motum has not been ruled out against the Panthers.

PULLMAN–Ken Bone and other NCAA Division I hoops coaches are waiting anxiously for NCAA Leadership Council voting Thursday on proposed recruiting changes sought by the Division I Coaches Congress. A key change would permit coaches to make direct contact with high school players the summer after their sophomore season. The current rule bans such contact until the summer after their junior season.
