Cougar baseballers talk about being drafted

MATT WAY'S TEAMMATES often spoke with admiration about the calm, poised manner Way went about his business when pitching for WSU. Way maintained his customary cool when he was drafted Wednesday. On one of the most important days of his life, Way was sound asleep in Pullman at about 9:15 a.m. when a Philadelphia Phillies scout called to inform Way that he had been drafted in the fifth round.

'It's a great day to be a Coug,' says Marbut

PULLMAN -- The tension and nervous chatter built steadily in the Camp Room at WSU's Bohler Athletic Complex as one regional after another was announced Monday morning during the NCAA baseball tournament selection show on ESPN. Finally, when "Washington State" appeared on the TV screen, 19 years of frustration was washed away by a deafening roar from some 200 players, coaches, family and friends.

Marbut the Magnificent is narrow wins master

PULLMAN -- There was no ceremony after the game. No announcement over the loudspeaker. No mention at all, actually. On Friday night, however, Donnie Marbut virtually clinched the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award when his Washington State Cougars clinched second place with a heartbeat-skipping, 6-5 win in 10 innings over Washington. Along the way, the Cougs also wrapped up a spot in the NCAA tourney.

Seeing is believing with Cougar baseballers

CORVALLIS -- You know Donnie Marbut wanted to say it. Wanted to scream it. Wanted to tell it to everyone in the world. Instead, Washington State's normally brash baseball coach put a zip lock on his normally talkative lips and stopped just short of saying Sunday's heart-stopping 7-6 win at Oregon State clinched WSU's first NCAA regionals berth in 19 years.

Marbut glad Lagreid found his stroke late

PULLMAN -- Washington State catcher Greg Lagreid waited until his senior year to develop into a .300 hitter. For that, coach Donnie Marbut is eternally grateful. "He's made a jump every single year," Marbut pointed out. "He went up 50 points for three straight years, and this year he decided to do a 100-point jump.
