Tyler Sands Ready For Starting Challenge

The Fighting Illini football team hasn't needed a lot of depth at guard this fall, until now. With starter Hugh Thornton uncertain with a knee issue, Tyler Sands is ready to step in. The Pennsylvania junior has toiled in obscurity during his career, but he has been groomed as the first sub off the bench. He is ready for the challenge.

Scout.com traveled to Berks County on Friday night to catch an opening night contest featuring Boyertown Area High School and Muhlenberg High School. Future Illinois offensive lineman Tyler Sands looked very impressive on the defensive side of the ball and did a nice job on offense as well, however his team ended up on the losing side of things.

Sands Makes His Decision

Since Ron Zook has become head coach of the Illinois program recruiting has taken off in a big way and this morning the Illini picked up another big recruit in Boyertown, Pa., native Tyler Sands. Only months ago Illinois was just another team on the list of 23 programs that Sands had been offered by, but a visit and some help from a current commitment changed all that.

"I just recently visited Illinois and after I came back I knew it would be Boston College and Illinois," Tyler Sands said. "Before I used to really like Boston College and they were my top choice, but now it's dead equal. I go back to Boston College on July 22 and hopefully in early August I'll be able to decide..."

Sands Names Two Favorites

Boyertown, Pa., offensive lineman Tyler Sands recently took a visit to the Midwest to visit Illinois and found more then just another program on that trip. After his visit to Champaign, Sands has now named two favorites among his nearly two-dozen offers and plans for a July decision.
