Fantasy MLB: Top 5 Weekly Boom and Bust Players

Our goal with this analysis is to not only tell you who the best players will be, but also tell you who most frequently exceeds their overall rank (boom players) and who comes up short the most frequently (weekly bust). We reviewed the season to identify players who have high boom rates and high bust rates. To determine if a player had a boom week we take that player's rank for the week and see if it is numerically 50% of his overall weekly average. A player who averages to be the 50th best player at his position would need to finish the week Top 25 to qualify. To qualify as a bust week, it has to be one where the weekly ranking is 50% higher than the normal average. So a Top 20 player finishing 30th or worse.

The first baseman with the highest boom rate is Jesus Aguilar whose per week average rank was #19. He had 9 weeks out of 27 where he delivered a big performance. At the second baseman position, Jose Altuve was the leader in boom rate. Rafael Devers, in an average week, is the #16 third baseman but he also has the highest bust rate at the position. But on the flip side he ranks #3 for highest boom rate. In his 24 weeks, 5 were bad, busts. Players like Xander Bogaerts and Rougned Odor are two of 5 players below who appear in both the boom and bust lists. These are the players who you'll want to carefully manage in terms of when to best start or sit because they rarely deliver an 'average' performance. The table below shows the player with the five highest boom and bust rates. The rank is based on the player's average position rank per week and not their season total fantasy points.
