SCOUT ANALYST TAKE
Michael Porter Jr. was once a top-3 projected pick in the 2018 NBA Draft but fell to #14 due to concerns about his health. MPJ landed in a great spot in Denver and was able to essentially take a “redshirt” year to get back to full health. Porter Jr. had been drawing rave reviews out of Denver, and many fans were eager to see if he could live up to the hype in Summer League, but he was ruled out of Summer League with a knee strain. The injury won’t ease the concerns from those that are doubting his ability to stay healthy, and his knee injury is even more concerning because both his younger brother and older sisters have sustained serious injuries to their knees. With no official word we are assuming he misses at least October. The Nuggets picked up Paul Milap’s contract option this season, and Milsap will likely start at the 4 for the Nuggets, but MPJ will get ample opportunity to show what he can do this season. At 6’11, Porter has the size to play the 4, but he also has the skillset to play the 3. I wouldn’t take Porter in the early rounds of my fantasy draft given his injury concerns, but I would definitely take a risk and select Porter in the mid to later rounds of my draft. His upside is enormous, and I wouldn’t want any of my opponents to have Porter, especially in a keeper league.
DRAFT ADVICE AND POSITION RANK
Our projection says Michael Porter Jr. is not worth drafting for the 2019-2020 season but he is a borderline fantasy player. His 529 projected fantasy points puts him at #130 behind Vince Carter and ahead of Wesley Iwundu. He is expected to be out through 11/1 which impacts his fantasy ranking. He is projected to average 9.4 fantasy points. His rank based on avg proj (#116) is better than his rank based on total fantasy points.
